Bastiments
Description
The Pic de Bastiments, also known as Pic del Gegant, stands majestically at 2,881 meters of altitude, making it one of the most emblematic peaks in the Eastern Pyrenees. It is the second highest summit in the Ripollès region and notably the easternmost peak in the entire Pyrenean range to exceed 2,800 meters. Its strategic location marks the natural border between Ripollès (Catalonia) and Conflent (France), geographically separating the Circ d'Ulldeter and the Circ de Bacivers (on its north face). The summit converges three municipal areas: Setcases, Queralbs, and Fontpedrosa.
This peak lies at the heart of the Parc Natural de les Capçaleres del Ter i del Freser (Natural Park of the Ter and Freser Headwaters), a high-mountain environment rich in biodiversity. Its slopes feature black pine forests that ascend to pastures and, eventually, alpine meadows. The fauna is characteristic of high mountain regions, with chamois, marmots, and distinctive birds like the lammergeier and rock ptarmigan. At the very top, in addition to a geodetic marker, there is an iron cross (located at 2,858 m) and a unique steel pole shaped like an ice axe, serving as an iconic landmark for many hikers.
Geologically, Bastiments is primarily composed of gneiss. Its orography has been profoundly shaped by ancient glacial action, resulting in a high-mountain landscape characterized by stony terrain, scree slopes, and steep gradients.
The views from the summit are exceptional, offering an unparalleled panorama of the Eastern Pyrenees. From here, one can admire massifs such as Canigó, Puigmal, and Pic de l'Infern, as well as the Coma de Vaca valley, peaks like Torreneules and Balandrau, the Vallter cirque, and the imposing French valleys of Bacivers and Coma Mitjana.
Notable nearby peaks include Gra de Fajol (2,714 m) and Pic de Freser (2,835 m), often connected by the well-known Coll de la Marrana pass. Other prominent neighbors are Pic de l'Infern (2,870 m), Pic de la Dona, Balandrau, and Puigmal. Towns at the foot of Bastiments include Setcases (a popular starting point for the road to Vallter 2000 ski resort), Queralbs (Ripollès), and Fontpedrosa (Conflent, France).
