Bellmunt
Description
Bellmunt rises to an altitude of 1,248 m, marking the highest point of the mountain range of the same name and designated as one of the essential "100 Summits" by the FEEC (Catalan Federation of Hiking). Located in the municipality of Sant Pere de Torelló (Osona), this peak is part of a large anticline fold that divides the hydrographic basins of the Ter and Fluvià rivers.
Regarded as an exceptional lookout point, Bellmunt offers stunning panoramic views of the Eastern Pyrenees (including Puigmal and Bastiments), the Transversal Range, Montseny, Collsacabra, and the Vic Plain. Its natural environment features holm oak and oak forests on sunny slopes, while an extensive beech forest (fageda) dominates the shadier, northern parts, providing a spectacular display of colors in autumn. The area is part of the Milany-Santa Magdalena and Puigsacalm-Bellmunt Protected Natural Area.
Very close to the summit, atop a rocky spur, stands the Sanctuary of Mare de Déu de Bellmunt, documented since 1240 and famously described by the poet Jacint Verdaguer as a "hermitage suspended in the sky." This historic pilgrimage site, also known as Mare de Déu de les Alades, offers a guesthouse, a Catalan cuisine restaurant, and a bar service. The summit is accessible on foot via marked routes like the PR-C 45 or GR-151, and also by an asphalt road leading to a car park near the sanctuary.
