OpenStreetMapDescription
The Castell de Besora (Besora Castle) is a historic structure and peak located in Santa Maria de Besora (Osona). It is situated atop a hill (west of the town) at an altitude of 1,023 meters above sea level (masl). The site is officially recognized as a Cultural Asset of National Interest.
The castle is documented as early as 895. Historically, its territory encompassed the areas of the present-day municipalities of Sant Quirze de Besora, Santa Maria de Besora, and Montesquiu. Despite being reinforced during the Remensa War (15th century), the castle was already in poor condition by the 17th century. It was ultimately torn down in 1839 by Carlist troops, along with the Church of Santa Maria.
Today, only highly damaged fragments of the walls and the ruins of the former Romanesque church of Santa Maria remain at the summit. The most visible remnants belong to the church, showcasing Romanesque architecture with a semicircular apse and Lombard arches.
