El Far
Description
The El Far (1,124 m) is an emblematic mountain on the Collsacabra plateau (Susqueda municipality, La Selva), which rises vertically like the bow of a ship over the valley. Its summit is one of the most exceptional viewpoints in Catalonia, offering 360º panoramas over the Susqueda Reservoir, Les Guilleries, the Montseny, reaching as far as the Canigó and the Costa Brava.
Geologically, El Far is composed of limestone from the Eocene period and crowns a long and impressive line of cliffs (cinglera). A curious geological detail is the abundant presence of marine fossils (nummulites) on its paths, testifying to the area's submerged past millions of years ago.
At the summit is the Santuari de la Mare de Déu del Far (Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Lighthouse), a center of devotion with documented origins in 1269, linked to a legend of sailors. The complex includes a Guesthouse and Restaurant. The church, rebuilt after the 1428 earthquake, venerates a 15th-century Gothic alabaster image, one of the best-preserved Gothic Marian icons.
