La Mola de Sant Llorenç del Munt
Description
La Mola (1,103 m) is the highest peak of the Sant Llorenç del Munt massif and the highest point in the Vallès Occidental comarca. This iconic mountain offers a perfect blend of nature, unique geology, and rich historical heritage, crowned by the majestic Monastery of Sant Llorenç del Munt.
Its unmistakable profile is a result of its geological composition, mainly conglomerates, erosion-resistant sedimentary rocks deposited millions of years ago. Natural forces have carved a spectacular landscape of monoliths, channels, and cliffs, featuring over 280 inventoried caves and sinkholes. Its geological significance has led to the massif's inclusion in the UNESCO Global Geopark of Central Catalonia.
The predominant ecosystem is the holm oak forest (alzinar), covering much of the mountain, while unique adapted species like the endemic Montcau Sandwort (*Arenaria fontqueri*) grow in the bare rock areas. Its cliffs are a sanctuary for birds of prey such as the Bonelli's Eagle, and its forests host various wildlife including wild boars and genets.
At the summit stands the Monastery of Sant Llorenç del Munt, an 11th-century Romanesque Benedictine monastery consecrated in 1064 and declared a Cultural Asset of National Interest. The mountain is also associated with the legend of the Dragon of Sant Llorenç, featuring sites like Morral del Drac, and holds significant prehistoric archaeological sites.
The most classic and popular route to the summit is the historic Camí dels Monjos (Monks' Path), starting in Matadepera. It is a medium-difficulty hike with steep, paved sections, offering exceptional panoramic views of Montserrat, Terrassa, and much of the Catalan landscape. The former historical restaurant at the summit has been converted into an informative viewing room to better preserve the natural and monumental environment.
