Matagalls
Description
Matagalls, standing at 1,697 m above sea level, is the third highest peak in the Montseny massif, after Turó de l'Home and Les Agudes. Located between the regions of Osona and Vallès Oriental, it is considered an "introductory peak" for hiking in Catalonia due to its popularity and accessibility. From its summit, on clear days, it offers panoramic views stretching from the Pyrenees to the Balearic Islands.
Geologically, Matagalls is notable for featuring some of the oldest materials in Montseny, primarily spotted phyllites and slates of Paleozoic (Carboniferous) age. These metamorphic rocks, formed by regional and contact metamorphism with granitic intrusions, give rise to a characteristic relief with steep ridges and high-mountain areas dominated by meadows and scree above 1,300 m.
The summit is a site rich in historical and cultural heritage: a prominent cross dedicated to Mossèn Cinto Verdaguer stands at its peak. Furthermore, it was one of the triangulation points used in the late 18th century for measuring the terrestrial meridian and defining the length of the meter. Along its access routes, such as the classic one from Collformic, rural heritage elements like the Pla de la Barraca ice pit can be found. Matagalls is also the historical starting point of the Matagalls-Montserrat endurance walk.
The name "Matagalls" was first documented in 1500 (formerly "Autora"), with its etymology linked to the possible historical presence of capercaillie or to a popular legend that it "kills the young cocks" (inexperienced or boastful hikers).
