Montcau
Description
Montcau is one of the most emblematic and accessible peaks in central Catalonia. Standing at 1,057 meters above sea level, it is the second-highest point in the Sant Llorenç del Munt i l'Obac Massif, only surpassed by La Mola. Its name derives from the Latin Monte Calvo (bald mountain), referring to the characteristic lack of vegetation on its summit.
Located straddling the regions of Vallès Occidental (Sant Llorenç Savall) and Bages (Mura), its unmistakable monolithic pyramidal silhouette offers one of the best viewpoints in the country. Geologically, it is primarily composed of conglomerates (rocks formed by cemented pebbles), which give it great resistance to erosion and form its characteristic rocky cliffs (cingles).
Montcau provides an exceptional 360-degree panoramic view. From its summit, one can see the Pyrenees and Cadí to the north, the peak of La Mola and the Vallès plain to the south, the Montserrat massif to the west, and Montseny to the east. The surrounding area is also home to the Cova Simanya cave, the legend of the Dragon of Sant Llorenç, and the historic vineyard vats (tines enmig de les vinyes).
The classic ascent begins at Coll d'Estenalles (870 m). The route is straightforward and suitable for families, being included in the FEEC's "100 peaks" list. The final section involves a short and easy scramble over bare rock, adding a touch of adventure to the hike.
