Montclar
Description
Montclar is a peak of 401 meters located in the municipality of Santa Cristina d'Aro, within the Baix Empordà region. It forms part of the Ardenya massif (or Cadiretes - l'Ardenya), within the Catalan Coastal Range (Serralada Litoral Catalana), and is included in the FEEC's "100 Summits" challenge.
It stands out for its abrupt and rocky morphology, typical of granitic formations, featuring coarse-grained leucogranites and singular formations such as the "Esfinx del Montclar" (Sphinx of Montclar). The peak is closely associated with the Carcaixells d'en Dalmau, a ridge of granite domes that give it a steep character.
Dense Mediterranean vegetation, including cork oak forests (suredes) and pine groves, surrounds the granitic formations. From the summit, an exceptional 360-degree panorama unfolds, encompassing the Aro Valley (Vall d'Aro), the Ardenya massif, Les Gavarres, and the coastline with the Mediterranean Sea.
The ascent is a classic route often combined with the traverse of the Carcaixells. Starting from Solius or Can Llaurador, the access along the ridge is considered of medium-high difficulty, with sections equipped with chains and ropes. At the summit, there is a cairn, a senyera (Catalan flag), and a small niche dedicated to Saint Bernard of Menthon, patron saint of hikers. The area also features historical elements such as the Menhir de Can Llaurador.
