Les Orelles de la Mula
Description
Les Orelles de la Mula (Catalan for "The Mule's Ears") is a mountain with an altitude of 688 meters, located in the Alt Empordà region, precisely on the border separating the municipalities of Colera and Rabós.
Its peculiar name stems from its shape, as it comprises two twin peaks aligned north-south, resembling a mule's ears. Interestingly, while coastal inhabitants use this name, people from inland villages refer to it as les Barbes del Boc (or de Boc), meaning "The Goat's Beards". This summit is nestled within the Serra de Balmenta (or Balmeta) mountain range, which is part of the eastern or maritime Albera sector, characterized by a distinctly Mediterranean environment.
The botanical surroundings are marked by the presence of cork oak forests and holm oak groves with strawberry trees, along with an upper strip of mountain holm oak, although the landscape has been historically severely affected by forest fires. Les Orelles de la Mula stands out as a site of tourist and natural interest within the municipality of Rabós.
