Pollegó superior (Pedraforca)
Description
The Pollegó Superior, at an altitude of 2,506 meters, is the highest and most emblematic peak of the Pedraforca massif, a symbol of Catalan alpinism. Together with the Pollegó Inferior (2,445 m), it forms the unmistakable "fork" silhouette, separated by the prominent Enforcadura (2,356 m). Its impressive north face features a vertical wall ranging from 600 to 800 meters, dropping into the Gresolet valley.
Geologically, it is part of the Upper Mantle of Pedraforca and presents a unique case of stratigraphic inversion, with older Lower Cretaceous limestones overlying more modern materials. This hard rock lithology has resisted differential erosion, shaping the distinctive form of the massif.
Pollegó Superior is a historic setting for alpinism. The conquest of its north face, particularly with the opening of the renowned "Estasen" route in 1928, marked the beginning of difficult climbing in Catalonia. For hikers, the Ruta del Verdet is the most frequented path, categorized as a high-mountain route, involving scrambling sections via the Canal del Verdet. From the summit, extraordinary panoramic views extend over the Cadí, Moixeró, Andorra, and a large part of the Pyrenees and Pre-Pyrenees. In the higher altitudes, chamois (isard) and alpine flora species like Ramonda myconi can be found.
