Puig de les Cols
Description
The Puig de les Cols, standing at 417 m above sea level, is a prominent mountain located in the Ardenya Massif, part of the Catalan Coastal Range. It serves as a natural boundary between the municipalities of Santa Cristina d'Aro and Sant Feliu de Guíxols, within the Baix Empordà comarca, and is recognized as one of the "100 Summits" by the Catalan Federation of Hiking Entities (FEEC).
Geologically, the summit is composed of granitic materials, specifically leucogranites, featuring an abrupt terrain with irregular rocky formations sculpted by erosion. The surrounding vegetation is typically Mediterranean, characterized by cork oak and pine forests, with a dense undergrowth of heather, strawberry trees, and junipers.
Puig de les Cols offers an exceptional geographical vantage point, providing spectacular 360º panoramic views. From its peak, one can observe the pre-coastal ranges (Montseny, Guilleries, Gavarres), the pre-coastal depression, and the Eastern Pyrenees including the iconic Canigó, as well as the distinctive granite outcrops of Les Carcaixells. The ascent is popular among hikers, often following routes connected to the GR-92 and the Pedralta viewpoint, with a final section that may require using hands to navigate some rocky steps.
