Puig de ses Cadiretes
Description
Puig de ses Cadiretes (also known as Puig de les Cadiretes), standing at 519 m above sea level, is the highest peak of the Ardenya Massif (or Cadiretes Massif). It lies on the border between the comarcas of La Selva and El Gironès, within the municipalities of Tossa de Mar and Llagostera. This peak is included in the FEEC's "100 Cims" list.
Geologically, the massif is part of the Catalan Coastal Range and is primarily composed of granites and leucogranites. Erosion has sculpted characteristic forms such as domes, boulders, and curious weathering pans (cassoletes d’erosió), visible at the summit. The highest point is a rocky mound requiring a simple scramble to reach.
The surrounding environment features dense Mediterranean vegetation, predominantly cork oak and holm oak forests, lending a wild character to the massif's interior. From its vantage point, Puig de ses Cadiretes offers a 360-degree panorama that encompasses the coastline and the Mediterranean Sea, the La Selva plain, the Aro valley, and on clear days, distant ranges like Montseny, Les Guilleries, and Canigó in the Pyrenees.
At the summit, remnants of a medieval settlement with dry-stone walls can be found, which utilized natural granite blocks for defense, situated near the geodetic vertex and a forest watchtower. Furthermore, the surrounding area is rich in megalithic monuments, such as the Pedra-sobre-Altra paradolmen and several menhirs, evidencing ancient human occupation.
