Puig dels Bufadors
Description
The Puig dels Bufadors, at an altitude of 432 meters, is an emblematic mountain in the Alt Empordà region, situated directly on the border between the municipalities of Cadaqués and El Port de la Selva. This peak stands out as the highest point of the Muntanya Negra massif and is located within the protected area of the Cap de Creus Natural Park, also included in the FEEC's list of 100 significant peaks.
Its surroundings feature an rugged, historic landscape dominated by adapted local vegetation. On its slopes, a notable heritage of traditional architecture can be found, including the ruins of Mas Bufadors, a large 17th-century farmhouse located on the serrat de les Conilleres. The summit is accessible via various hiking routes, such as those connecting with the GR 92 long-distance path between El Port de la Selva and Cadaqués, and easily reached from the pass separating it from the steep Puig de l'Infern. Throughout the mountainous terrain, numerous dry-stone terraces, walls, and huts are visible, testifying to the historical agricultural use of this harsh land.
Geologically, Puig dels Bufadors is composed of very ancient metamorphic rocks, primarily schist (crystalline schists), slate, and phyllite. This ridge of the Muntanya Negra is also characterized by a significant presence of iron mineral outcrops, which were exploited in the past and give the cliffs and rocks of this massif a distinctively dark or black coloration.
Reaching this summit rewards hikers with immense and indescribable views. From the top, one can gaze upon the village of Cadaqués at its base, the silhouette of Pení mountain nearby, the Cap de Creus lighthouse, Llançà, Colera, the Rosselló coast to the north, as well as the Bay of Roses and the Empordà plain.
