Puig d'en Jordà
Description
The Puig d'en Jordà, at an altitude of 754 meters, is an emblematic peak located on the border between Rabós (Alt Empordà) and Banyuls de la Marenda (Roussillon). It forms part of the Albera mountain range and is one of the «100 summits» challenge of the FEEC. Historically, it hosts cross-border marker 594, established as a result of the Treaty of the Pyrenees.
This mountain is fully integrated into the Albera Natural Area of National Interest, characterized by a dry, Mediterranean environment. Dominant vegetation includes cork oak forests and scrubland with gorse, cistus, heather, and broom. This sector is crucial for the survival of the Mediterranean spur-thighed tortoise and for the presence of interesting flora like Gagea bohemica.
Geologically, Puig d'en Jordà is composed of Pyrenean metamorphic rocks such as schist, slate, and phyllite. Their fissured texture and dark color give the ascent a high-mountain feel, despite its relatively low elevation. From the summit, spectacular views unfold: to the south and east, the plain of the Alt Empordà, the Cap de Creus, and the Mediterranean Sea (reaching the Montseny on clear days); to the north and west, the Roussillon plain, Perpignan, the Salses lagoon, and the majestic silhouette of the Canigó massif.
