Puig Gros
Description
The Puig Gros is a mountain with an altitude of 325 meters, located in the municipality of Sant Feliu de Guíxols, in the Baix Empordà region. It is part of the Ardenya massif (or Cadiretes - l'Ardenya), which belongs to the Catalan Coastal Range (Serralada Litoral Catalana). This peak is included in the "100 Cims" (100 Peaks) challenge by the Catalan Federation of Hiking Organizations (FEEC).
Geologically, it is a granitic dome, characterized by medium to fine-grained leucogranites and a wide variety of erosion microforms, such as erosion pans, nerviations, polygonal cracks, tafoni, and speleothems.
The area is rich in archaeological heritage, hosting one of the most important megalithic groupings in the Ardenya massif. Notable features include paradolmens (natural cavities used as collective burial sites during the Neolithic and Bronze Age) and the Cova del Puig Gros (Puig Gros Cave), also a prehistoric burial ground.
Although the summit is occupied by communication antennas, it offers good views of the coast (Palamós, Platja d'Aro, Sant Feliu de Guíxols, Tossa de Mar) and the interior of the massif, including the Canigó on clear days. The southern slope holds high ecological value, with raptors like the common buzzard and kestrel observed, despite the area having suffered from forest fires.
