Puigmal
Description
The Puigmal (2,909.8 m), also known as Puigmal d'Er, is the highest peak of the Gran Olla de Núria and the most emblematic of the Ripollès region. This colossus of the Eastern Pyrenees borders Queralbs and Er (Alta Cerdanya). Despite its height, the peak is wide and rounded, with gentle slopes, which facilitates the ascent. The summit offers an exceptional viewpoint and is marked by an iron cross and the celebrated verses of Mossèn Cinto Verdaguer.
Puigmal is one of the most frequented peaks in Catalonia. The classic ascent is made from the Núria Sanctuary climbing through the Coma de l'Embut (about 1,000 m of positive elevation gain). Another popular route starts from Fontalba, traversing the ridge along the Serra del Borrut, often combined into a circular route with Núria.
The summit has great symbolic and sporting importance. It is the key piece of the integral traverse of the Olla de Núria and the culminating point of the "Quatre Puigmals" route. It is also highly frequented in winter, with ski mountaineering routes ascending the French slope from Cotzé (Er), taking advantage of its gentle gradients.
