Sant Jeroni
Description
Sant Jeroni Peak (1,236 m) is the highest point of the legendary Montserrat mountain, located at the confluence of the municipalities of El Bruc, Marganell, and Monistrol de Montserrat. It represents the highest elevation in the Bages and Anoia regions and is one of the most classic and essential ascents in Catalan hiking.
Geologically, Montserrat is characterized by a landscape sculpted by differential erosion on a massif of deltaic conglomerates, composed of calcareous pebbles bound by natural cement. The action of water over millennia has created its distinctive needles and iconic formations such as the Cavall Bernat or the Gorra Frígia, all within the protected Montserrat Mountain Natural Park.
The classic route from the Monastery is of easy/medium difficulty, with an elevation gain of approximately 520 meters. The path winds through holm oak forests (such as in Pla dels Ocells) and stepped sections (Pas dels Francesos), leading to the ancient Sant Jeroni hermitage and its final flight of stairs with a handrail. From the summit, equipped with an orientation table, hikers can enjoy an exceptional 360-degree panorama, which on clear days can stretch from the Pyrenees to Els Ports, and even Mallorca.
Historically, in the late 18th century, Sant Jeroni served as a crucial triangulation point for measuring the Earth's meridian, contributing to the precise determination of the length of the meter.
