Torre de Norfeu
Description
The Torre de Norfeu, at an altitude of 171 meters, crowns the highest point of the Cap Norfeu peninsula, located in the municipality of Roses (Alt Empordà). This narrow, curved strip of land extends approximately 2 kilometers into the Mediterranean Sea, forming the northern boundary of the Gulf of Roses and separating Jóncols Bay from Montjoi Bay, at the southeastern tip of the Cap de Creus Natural Park.
The Cap Norfeu area is an Integral Natural Reserve, encompassing both terrestrial and marine environments, within the Cap de Creus Natural Park. This designation ensures maximum protection for this rugged landscape characterized by cliffs and numerous natural caves. Notable features include the medieval Cova de les Ermites, as well as the flora dominated by maquis, pines, holm oaks, and the endemic moss Phascum cuynetii. In the marine realm, the whimsically shaped Illes Mòniques islets, including Cavall Bernat and Gat (legendary site of Orpheus's shipwreck), add significant scenic and mythological value.
Geologically, the area is of extraordinary relevance, cataloged as a Lower Paleozoic geozone. The "Norfeu Series" features a succession of sedimentary rocks, primarily composed of marmorized limestones, sandstones, and massive conglomerates, interspersed with volcanic and subvolcanic rocks. This unique composition has shaped a karstic coastal morphology with sea-level caves and spectacular, large-scale tectonic folds clearly visible from the cliffs.
Although only the lower floor, which served as a cistern, remains of the original structure today, the Torre de Norfeu and its viewpoints serve as an authentic watchtower. They offer spectacular panoramic views: to the south, one can admire Cala Montjoi, Cala Pelosa, and the expanse of the Gulf of Roses; to the north, Jóncols Bay; to the east, the tip of Cap Norfeu extending into the sea; and on the inland horizon, the Pyrenean mountains, including the mythical silhouette of Canigó.
Nearby towns to the cape include Roses, to which the entire territory belongs, and Cadaqués.
