Tossal de Mirapallars i Urgell
Description
The Tossal de Mirapallars (1,672 m), also known as Tossal de Mirapallars i Urgell, is a prominent peak located in the Montsec de Rúbies mountain range, in the eastern part of the Montsec. It forms a natural border between the Noguera (Vilanova de Meià municipality) and Pallars Jussà (Gavet de la Conca and Llimiana municipalities) regions, and is a popular destination for hikers, listed among the 100 peaks by the FEEC.
Primarily composed of Mesozoic limestone, calcarenites, and sandstone, the mountain features an asymmetrical and spectacular relief. The southern slope is steep, forming imposing walls and cliffs, while the northern slope gently inclines. Its distinct karstic morphology has led to the formation of numerous holes and caves, such as the Cova de Gel.
From the summit, extensive panoramic views are offered, with a notable westward sight of the Tossal de les Torretes (1,676 m), which is the highest point in the Noguera region and lies a short distance along the ridge. The natural environment boasts rich biodiversity and holds significant historical value, with Spanish Civil War trenches camouflaged among the vegetation, as well as various Neolithic remains.
The most logical and easiest ascent is via the northern slope, offering gentle gradients from Hostal Roig and following forest tracks and sections of the GR-1 trail. Routes ascending the southern face are more demanding, featuring steep gulleys and rocky, less obvious paths.
