Turó de Sant Elies
Description
The Turó de Sant Elies is an emblematic mountain in the Montseny massif, located in the municipality of Sant Pere de Vilamajor (Vallès Oriental). With an altitude of 999 m, it stands as the last spur of the Pla de la Calma, offering privileged views over the Tordera River valley.
Geologically, the hill is complex, featuring outcrops of Paleozoic materials (Cambrian-Ordovician shales with varying degrees of metamorphism, and Devonian calcareous schists and limestones). Its most distinctive feature is the Ermita de Sant Elies (Hermitage of Saint Elias), a 17th-century construction (built over an older chapel) located near the summit. Linked to a 15th-century legend associating the saint with rain, the hermitage is the focal point of a traditional pilgrimage (aplec) every April 25th (Saint Mark's Day).
The summit, crowned by a fire lookout tower, offers exceptional panoramic views extending from the sea to the Montnegre-Corredor range, Turó de l'Home, the Tordera valley, Collserola, and Montserrat. Access is possible via a forest track or by following the Sender del Pi Novell (PR-C 139) trail, which partly follows a traditional drovers' road of medieval origin (9th-10th centuries).
