Carlit Circular: Castellar Ridge and the Bulloses Lakes Circuit
Performed on 7/11/2026
Description
On July 11, 2026, an 18.98 km route was completed, leading to the summit of Carlit, a prominent peak in the Eastern Pyrenees. The itinerary began from the parking area of Lake Les Bulloses, in French Cerdanya / Northern Catalonia, following an overnight stay at a nearby campsite to allow for an early start.
The ascent was undertaken via a less frequented variant than the classic lakes route. After skirting the lakes of Viver and Dugues, the path followed a more solitary climb, passing by Estany del Castellar and ascending along the panoramic Carena del Castellar. This section led to Tossa del Lloser (2804m), and subsequently, the ridge traverse continued past Puig de l'Estany Sobirà (2785m) and Carlit de Baix (2806m). The final part of the ascent to the summit of Pica del Carlit (2921m), the highest point in Cerdanya, involved some scrambling of difficulty I-IIº along the North/East Ridge.
The descent, in contrast to the ascent, followed the more well-trodden and frequented main path. The route passed by a succession of lakes: Sobirà Gelat, Sobirà, Trebens, Gombau, de la Vallell, Sec, and de la Comassa. To complete the visit to the area, a small detour was made to include lakes Llong, Llat, and Negre, before returning to the starting point, thus completing a circular route offering diverse landscapes. The day concluded with refreshments at the Alberg du Carlit.
