On February, 2026, we embarked on a 12.46 km circular route to explore the charms of the Montgrí Massif. This outing was planned as preparation for a future trail by the centre excursionista Sant Vicenç, and for me, it marked the first hiking foray into a massif I already knew for its significant botanical value, especially for the presence of orchids. The objective was to circle the evocative Santa Caterina valley, on a day that began on the outskirts of Torroella de Montgrí.
We started the ascent, heading towards Cau del Duc, an impressive cave known for its climbing routes. From there, a small but fun scramble led us back to the main path, which wound its way at the foot of ancient quarries testifying to the area's history. Before long, the imposing silhouette of Castell de Montgrí rose before us, inviting us to explore it. Once at the top, we walked along its walls and towers, and even climbed its ramparts to enjoy the first views. During the circuit around the castle, we already had our first botanical reward: the delicate H. robertianum orchids were beginning to bloom.
Continuing our route, we headed towards Coll d'en Garrigàs and undertook an ascent in the direction of Montplà. Here, the visual reward was extraordinary: spectacular views embracing the blue waters where the Medes Islands rest. Subsequently, we advanced to Coll del Puig and descended towards the peaceful area of Santa Caterina. This spot proved to be a true botanical garden, as among the barbecues and the hermitage, we found more specimens of H. robertianum and, just in the parking area, a beautiful cluster of the unique O. forestieri.
After this floristic interlude, we tackled an ascent on a rather poorly marked path, which led us to Puig de Carroig. From this point, we followed a more defined path that offered clear views of the majestic Canigó in the distance, until reaching La Muntanyeta. From there, we descended to connect with the valley track. After crossing the track, we resumed the ascent to delve back into the massif, eventually reaching the summits of Muntanya d'Ullà and Puig Rodó, from where we could once again contemplate the unmistakable silhouette of the castle.
The final descent led us to Coll de la Creu and, from there, we rejoined the traditional castle path that guided us without getting lost back to the starting point of our adventure. It was the first day of the year that truly felt "hot," with intense sun and a clear sky illuminating every corner of this landscape, though with the awareness that shade is a scarce commodity. A circular journey full of discoveries, impressive views, and botanical surprises that left us with an unforgettable memory of the Montgrí Massif.
