Ascent to Costabona: A Winter Experience Amidst Fog and Snow
Performed on 3/1/2026
Description
On March 1, 2026, we embarked on an ambitious 8.49 km ascent of Costabona, armed with our snowshoes, to embrace the mountain's winter majesty. We already knew that vehicle access would be limited, and the snow confirmed our expectations, forcing us to leave the car about 3 km below Collada Fonda, our snowshoe starting point.
After strapping on our snowshoes, we began the climb towards Collada Fonda. The landscape was purely winter, a blanket of snow covering everything. Upon reaching the pass, we encountered a curious sight: an abandoned car, half-buried by the snow, a scene we had already glimpsed on Instagram and Wikiloc, adding a touch of adventure to our route.
From that point, the ascent became more direct towards the summit, while a dense fog enveloped us, creating a mystical and enigmatic atmosphere. Amidst the uncertainty, the mountain granted us a magical moment: for a brief 2 minutes, the sun broke through the fog, fleetingly illuminating our objective, the summit of Costabona, which still appeared distant.
Once at the summit, the views, as expected due to the fog, were almost non-existent, but the satisfaction of having conquered Costabona in these conditions was immense. We immortalized the moment with the obligatory photos next to the cross and the orientation table, silent witnesses to our ascent. Afterwards, we began our return journey, retracing our own steps over the snow back to where we had left the vehicle, bringing an end to a demanding yet deeply gratifying day in the spectacular winter landscape.
