Estany de Banyoles: From La Draga to Porqueres, millennia on the shore
Performed on 11/22/2025 | Published on 11/24/2025
Description
A cold and crisp late autumn day, perfect for an unhurried walk around the Estany (Lake). The view was spectacular, with the sheet of water reflecting the snowy peaks of the Pyrenees as a backdrop. An experience of serenity around this unique karstic phenomenon in Catalonia.
The route, completely flat and accessible, allowed us to contemplate the two major historical and landscape landmarks. To the west, the stunning Romanesque church of Santa Maria de Porqueres (dating from 1182) stands out, perfectly integrated into the tranquility of the shore.
Further along, we passed by the iconic 'pesqueres' (fishing houses) and the La Draga Neolithic Park. The latter hides one of the best-preserved Neolithic lakeside settlements in Europe. A fascinating contrast between the geological antiquity of the lake and the millennial human footprint established there. A short, necessary circular route.
