Deep Dive into Montseny: An Intense Circular Hike to its Loftiest Peaks.
Performed on 5/16/2026
Description
On May 16, 2026, a demanding circular route of 26.01 km was completed within the Montseny Natural Park. The objective was to link the three most emblematic peaks of the range – Matagalls, Turó de l'Home, and Les Agudes – a feat never before accomplished in a single day. The planning for this route came about after discarding other proposals such as El Caro (due to strong winds) or Torreta del Cadí and Vulturó (due to cold temperatures and potential early snow), finally opting for Montseny with the aid of the Wikiloc planner.
The itinerary commenced at Coll de Sant Marçal (approximately 1107 m), a point with available parking. From there, a steady ascent began through beech forests towards Coll Pregon (1578 m). At this juncture, a detour was taken that led to Matagalls (1697 m). Upon reaching the summit, the route retraced back to Coll Pregon, then continued in the direction of Font de Coll Pregon, followed by a descent to the Ermita de Sant Bernat (850 m). During this downhill section, red markers were followed, some of which had limited visibility.
From Sant Bernat, after a brief pause, the route proceeded towards crossing the Tordera river, after passing Camping Les Illes. For a segment of approximately 3 km in this section, the route presented a navigation challenge. Once the Tordera river was crossed, the itinerary followed signs for the "Tourdera" circuit, thus beginning an uninterrupted ascent towards Turó de l'Home. This climb, largely traversing a long and challenging track, connected with the GR 5.2 before reaching the summit road. As the route neared Turó de l'Home, a cold and dense fog appeared. Nevertheless, the summit was reached, where a stop was made for lunch.
Following lunch, the usual path connecting Turó de l'Home with Les Agudes was taken, a section with little difficulty. After summiting the final peak, the descent began, following the same GR, back to Coll de Sant Marçal. This descent was initially steep, wet, and rocky, before gradually easing through impressive beech forests.
Overall, the route proved to be long and intense, with a total execution time of just over 8 hours and approximately 7 hours of moving time.
