Ascent to Pollegó Superior of Pedraforca from Gósol
Performed on 5/17/2025
Description
On May 17, 2025, we reconnected with one of the most emblematic peaks in our region, the Pollegó superior of Pedraforca, this time via an exciting new route that offered a fresh perspective. Setting off from the picturesque village of Gósol, we embarked on a 10.11 km journey that promised adventure and beauty at every turn.
The ascent began with the challenging climb up the famous Gósol's scree slope (tartera), a section that tests endurance and balance but rewards with views that gradually open up over the stunning Cadí-Moixeró landscape. Once this section was conquered, we reached L'Enforcadura, a strategic point that brought us to the doorstep of the grand finale: the classic scramble to the summit. This technical and exhilarating section is the crowning glory of any Pedraforca ascent, offering climbing sensations with the aid of chains and exposed steps that get the heart racing.
This ascent was another milestone for the Centre Excursionista de Sant Vicenç, as part of their "50 summits for 50 years" club challenge, and served as superb training for the upcoming Pica d'Estats. Despite being a May ascent, the massif still held remnants of snow, adding a touch of splendor and a fascinating chromatic contrast beneath a sunny sky dotted with a few passing clouds.
Yet, the day held an unexpected surprise for us: in the midst of the scramble, we made a unique discovery – a well-crystallized calcite in excellent condition. While it's true that finding fossils in the Pedraforca massif is not uncommon, the presence of such a perfect calcite specimen was a small geological treasure that further illuminated the experience.
Upon reaching the summit, the satisfaction was palpable. The scramble, with its usual crowd (it is one of Catalonia's great peaks and never goes unnoticed), was a testament to the popularity of this majestic mountain. Pedraforca always impresses, whether it's your first time or your thousandth ascent, gifting unforgettable panoramas and the profound sense of having conquered a giant.
