Gymnadenia conopsea: The fragrant presence among the Dactylorhizas
Observed on 7/12/2025 | Published on 11/4/2025
Genus: Gymnadenia
Common Name: Fragrant Orchid
Description
Although there were only a few specimens, the presence of the Gymnadenia conopsea was a small surprise. We found it amidst the large colony of Dactylorhiza maculata, sharing the same damp meadow habitat. It is an easily identifiable orchid due to its delicate spike of lilac flowers and its long spur, in addition to its intense fragrance.
About the Orchid
Gymnadenia conopsea, commonly known as the Fragrant Orchid (or Chalk Fragrant Orchid), is a terrestrial orchid found across much of Europe. It is notable for its long, narrow spike of pink or lilac flowers, and its extremely long and slender spur (often longer than the ovary). This species is highly valued for its intense, sweet fragrance, often described as being like cloves or vanilla. It grows in damp calcareous meadows and mountain pastures.
