Abundant Broad-leaved Helleborine Observations in Gironès
Observed on 6/10/2026
Description
During recent field excursions through the Gironès region, we encountered a notable abundance of Epipactis helleborine, commonly known as Broad-leaved Helleborine. This versatile Eurasian terrestrial orchid was among the most frequently observed Epipactis species during our stops in the area. Within these populations, we were also able to identify specimens belonging to the var. castanearum, acknowledging that distinguishing among various Epipactis species can often be a subtle challenge.
The robust presence of E. helleborine in Gironès is consistent with its known ecological adaptability. This opportunistic orchid thrives in a wide range of environments, from natural clearings in forests to human-modified habitats like roadsides and parks. Its broad, soft, ovate-lanceolate leaves and variable flowers, which can range from green to purple, characterize this resilient species. Unlike many orchids, Epipactis helleborine is not considered threatened and is known for its expanding distribution, successfully colonizing new territories even to the point of being labeled an invasive species in parts of North America. This observation highlights its adaptability and widespread success in the region.
