Observation of Epipactis kleinii at Puig del Far, Osona
Observed on 5/31/2026
Description
During a recent observation route at Puig del Far, located in the Osona region, we had the opportunity to document four specimens of Epipactis kleinii.
This orchid, known for its preference for clearings in sclerophyllous forests such as holm oak woods and basic, dry soils, is a near-endemism of the Iberian Peninsula and southern France, with a notable presence in the northeast, particularly in Catalonia. Of the four specimens found, only one displayed four fully open flowers, while the remaining three were just beginning to bud. This developmental stage aligns with its flowering period, which generally extends from May to July.
Epipactis kleinii is distinct for its inflorescences with small flowers that emit a faint, yet discernible, vanilla scent. Also notable is its cross-fertilization mechanism, attracting insects with nectar containing a narcotic substance. The discovery of these specimens at Puig del Far highlights the presence of a suitable habitat for the species in this area of Osona. Its conservation status in Catalonia is classified as "Least Concern" (LC), reflecting stable populations in the region.
