Post-Flowering Epipactis microphylla Sighting
Observed on 6/10/2026
Description
During a recent exploration focused on the genus Epipactis, we had the opportunity to locate a specimen of Epipactis microphylla, commonly known as the Small-leaved Helleborine. The most notable aspect of this observation was that the orchid was already in an advanced fruiting stage.
The observed individual displayed well-formed seed capsules, indicating that it had successfully completed its flowering cycle, which typically occurs between June and August. This species, characteristic of broadleaf forests and preferring calcareous soils in shady locations, is known for its autogamy (self-pollination). This adaptation allows it to reproduce efficiently even where pollinating insects are scarce. Its distinctive small, lanceolate leaves and densely pubescent stem are key morphological traits that aid in its identification during this later stage of its life cycle.
