Observation of Gymnadenia conopsea in Aigüestortes National Park

During a four-day trek through the Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park, we had the opportunity to document the presence of Gymnadenia conopsea, commonly known as the Fragrant Orchid. Our findings were concentrated near the Refugi de Saboredo, where we recorded approximately ten specimens. Most of these plants were already past their peak bloom, displaying only the last remaining flowers or having faded entirely, signaling the end of their prime flowering season.

This slender geophyte orchid is recognized for its long, cylindrical spike inflorescence, with flowers ranging from pink to white, and its distinctive very long, thin, pointed spur, designed to attract butterflies for pollination. Despite its specific name, conopsea, referring to a resemblance to gnats, the Gymnadenia conopsea emits a pleasant vanilla scent. It prefers humid environments such as wet meadows and mountain scrub, a habitat consistent with the alpine setting of the park. This observation, even at the tail end of its flowering period, contributes to the recorded distribution of this species within these high-mountain ecosystems.
