Observation of Gymnadenia conopsea at Puig del Far, Osona
Observed on 5/31/2026
Description
During a recent route to Puig del Far in Osona, we had the opportunity to document three specimens of Gymnadenia conopsea, commonly known as the Fragrant Orchid. A particularly interesting aspect of this discovery was that the individuals were still in an early stage, with their characteristic flowers yet to fully open.
This slender geophyte orchid, renowned for its pleasant vanilla scent, thrives in humid environments such as wet meadows and mountain scrub. The Puig del Far area, with its mountainous terrain, aligns well with the species' preferred habitat. Even though not in full bloom, the cylindrical spike inflorescence could already be discerned, hinting at the very long, thin, pointed spurs that will soon emerge to attract butterflies for pollination. In Catalonia, Gymnadenia conopsea is primarily found in the Pyrenees and other mountain areas, making this observation in Osona a valuable record for the species' distribution.
