Abundant discovery of Gymnadenia conopsea in Ripollès
Observed on 6/10/2026
Description
During several field observations in the Ripollès region, we had the opportunity to document a notable presence of Gymnadenia conopsea, commonly known as the Fragrant Orchid. This slender geophyte orchid prefers humid environments, such as wet meadows and mountain bogs, a habitat that aligns with the characteristics of the explored area.
We found many specimens in various stages of development, with several in full bloom, displaying their distinctive cylindrical flower spikes. The flowers, which range from pinkish to white hues, feature their very long, thin, and pointed spur—a key trait for identification and a mechanism to attract its primary pollinators, butterflies. The pleasant vanilla scent released by G. conopsea was also noticeable in some of the observed individuals.
The presence of such a number of healthy specimens in Ripollès underscores the importance of preserving these mountain habitats, vital for local biodiversity and for species like the Fragrant Orchid, which is a protected species in several autonomous regions. These observations enhance our understanding of its distribution within the Catalan Pyrenean region.
