Observation of Gymnadenia gabasiana on the Costa Pubilla Route
Observed on 6/27/2026
Description
During a recent route along Costa Pubilla, we had the opportunity to observe Gymnadenia gabasiana. This protected species, an endemism of the Pyrenean-Cantabrian mountain range, was encountered with only about four individuals. The plants appeared to be quite advanced in their flowering cycle, indicating a late-season observation for this high-altitude orchid.
Typically found in subalpine environments, thriving in sunny mountain pastures at altitudes between 1200 and 2550 meters, the specimens were consistent with this habitat preference. Known for its dense spike inflorescence and striking dark red to purplish-red flowers, Gymnadenia gabasiana is a small, tuberous geophyte. Even in their advanced state, the characteristic constricted labellum and small size were discernible, highlighting the unique morphology of this species, which typically flowers from June to August.
