Mass Flowering of Anacamptis coriophora in Osona
Observed on 5/31/2026
Description
During a recent route to Puig del Far, in the Osona region, we had the opportunity to discover a numerous population of Anacamptis coriophora. This orchid, commonly known as the Bug Orchid, was present with a multitude of specimens, most of which were at their peak flowering stage.
The observed individuals displayed dense spike-like inflorescences, featuring the characteristic dark wine red or reddish-purple flowers. Evidence suggests these were the subspecies Anacamptis coriophora subsp. fragrans, distinguished by its sweet and fragrant scent, in contrast to the unpleasant odor of the species' nominal form. Its labellum, with red spots on a paler center and greenish edges, was clearly visible. The habitat, consisting of open scrub and pastures, aligned with the preferences of this subspecies, which often occupies drier environments compared to the humid meadows preferred by other variants. This observation highlights the vitality of this orchid in the Osona area during its flowering period, which spans from April to early July.
