Tracking Anacamptis morio subsp. picta: Orchid Observations in Catalonia
Observed on 4/26/2026
Description
This Sunday, April 26th, our field research took us through the picturesque regions of Garrotxa and La Selva. Our primary objective for this excursion was to document the presence and condition of native orchid populations.
During our exploration, we were pleased to observe several specimens of the Green-winged Orchid, Anacamptis morio subsp. picta, all found in good condition. This particular subspecies, like its parent species, is known for its striking and colorful appearance, with distinctive green-veined sepals forming a "hood" over the flower. The plants were well into their spring flowering season, which typically runs from February or March through May and June, showcasing their characteristic striped and spotted flowers.
We found these terrestrial orchids thriving in what appeared to be suitable habitat, likely dry meadows or pastures with good sun exposure, consistent with their preference for limestone-rich soils. Documenting these healthy individuals contributes valuable data to our understanding of the local distribution and vitality of this Near Threatened species in these Catalonian counties.
