Multitude of Pyramidal Orchids Unfurl on the Puig del Far Trail
Observed on 5/31/2026
Description
During a recent hike to Puig del Far, located in the Osona region, we had the pleasure of discovering a multitude of Anacamptis pyramidalis specimens, commonly known as the Pyramidal Orchid. This perennial plant, noted for its distinctive inflorescence, thrives in open and sunny meadows and scrubland.
Most of the observed individuals were in the early stages of flowering, just beginning to open their blooms. This incipient stage is particularly interesting as it allows us to appreciate the characteristic conical or pyramidal shape that the inflorescence takes on at the beginning of its development, a feature from which the species derives its scientific name. The small flowers, which will eventually display hues from pale pink to intense purple, with their distinctive trilobed labellum and thread-like spur, already hinted at their coming beauty. The environment, likely open and sunny with calcareous soils, aligns perfectly with the species' preferred habitat and its typical flowering period between May and July.
This widespread discovery of Anacamptis pyramidalis in such an early flowering state at Puig del Far is a strong indicator of the health and vitality of local orchid populations in the Osona region, contributing valuable data to the recorded distribution of this species in Catalonia.
