Unopened Cephalanthera longifolia Flowers in Montserrat

During a recent walk through the Montserrat massif, we had the opportunity to document the presence of a few specimens of Cephalanthera longifolia, commonly known as the Narrow-leaved helleborine. The discovery occurred at an interesting point in the orchid's cycle, as its flowers had not yet opened, indicating an early stage in its flowering season.

This perennial terrestrial orchid is distinguished by its long, narrow leaves, which give it its scientific name, and these were already clearly visible. The Narrow-leaved helleborine typically flowers in spring, between April and June, and this observation in Montserrat perfectly aligns with the beginning of this period. It prefers shady and humid habitats, often on calcareous ground, which are common conditions in the massif, growing in holm oak forests or forest edges. We look forward to observing the beauty of its pure white flowers on future visits.
