Observation of Cephalanthera longifolia in Vidrà
Observed on 5/23/2026
Description
During a recent trek through the locality of Vidrà, we had the opportunity to document several specimens of Cephalanthera longifolia, commonly known as the Narrow-leaved helleborine. This perennial terrestrial orchid, admired for the pure white colour of its flowers, was observed in good flowering condition.
The specimens were found distributed throughout the entire route, with a more significant presence in the shady areas. This preference for locations more sheltered from direct sunlight and heat is consistent with the typical habitat of C. longifolia, which often seeks out shady and humid places. The plant, distinguished by its long, narrow leaves that lend it its scientific name, is commonly found in environments such as holm oak forests, pine forests, and forest edges, with its flowering period primarily occurring between April and June.
This observation highlights the presence of healthy populations of the Narrow-leaved helleborine in the Vidrà area, enriching our understanding of its local distribution.
