Cephalanthera longifolia preparing to bloom in Ripollès
Observed on 6/10/2026
Description
During a recent botanical survey in the Ripollès region, we documented an interesting sighting of Cephalanthera longifolia, commonly known as the Narrow-leaved helleborine. This perennial terrestrial orchid, recognized for its distinctive long, narrow leaves, was observed in an early stage of development, with its inflorescence still in bud and preparing for bloom.
The specimen found was in good condition, poised to unfurl its pure white flowers. This observation aligns well with its typical spring flowering period, which usually extends from April to June. C. longifolia often thrives in shady and humid locations, frequently on calcareous soils within holm oak or pine forests, characteristic conditions found in parts of the Ripollès area. The presence of this species, captured just before its peak display, offers a valuable record of its phenological stage and distribution in the region.
