Field Expedition in Ripollès: The Frog Orchid
Observed on 6/10/2026
Description
During a recent field survey in the Ripollès region, we had the opportunity to document the presence of Coeloglossum viride, commonly known as the Frog orchid. This terrestrial orchid, characterized by its discreet stature and effective camouflage within its surrounding vegetation, is a valued find in this area.
We recorded a total of three specimens of this species, distributed across two distinct locations within the Ripollès region. The observed individuals were in good condition, displaying their characteristic greenish-brownish coloration. Coeloglossum viride, also widely classified under the taxonomic synonym Dactylorhiza viridis, is distinguished by its obovate lower leaves and its lax, cylindrical spike inflorescence bearing small flowers, often tinged with reddish or purplish hues. The discovery was made in an environment likely consistent with its preferred habitats, such as grazed meadows or forest edges, featuring base-rich soils typical of the mountainous zones of Ripollès.
This observation provides valuable data on the local distribution of this orchid in the Girona territory, confirming its presence in these areas of the Pyrenean range.
