Observed on 6/21/2026
Note about the genus Dactylorhiza
Orchids of the genus Dactylorhiza are easily confused with each other. Therefore, observations of this genus may not be entirely accurate regarding the identified species.
Description
During a recent field outing, a specimen of Dactylorhiza elata, commonly known as the Robust Marsh Orchid, was documented near the San Pablo Bridge. This bridge is located within the historical complex of the Santa María de Obarra Monastery, an area whose damp, calcareous conditions are highly favorable for this geophyte orchid.
The observed individual presented characteristics typical of its species, suggesting a robust stature, potentially approaching its characteristic height of 50 to 90 cm. Its long, lanceolate leaves, often spotted with a burgundy colour, are a defining feature. If in bloom, its inflorescence would be a dense and compact spike crowned by reddish-purple flowers, indicative of its typical flowering period from late spring to early summer. As a species demanding constant humidity, D. elata thrives in moist meadows, rush beds, and stream banks, conditions that align perfectly with its riparian location near the bridge. This sighting contributes to the understanding of the species' presence in this specific region.
