Carlit Expedition: Abundance of Dactylorhiza maculata
Observed on 7/11/2026
Note about the genus Dactylorhiza
Orchids of the genus Dactylorhiza are easily confused with each other. Therefore, observations of this genus may not be entirely accurate regarding the identified species.
Description
During a recent exploration route in Carlit, an area known for its high mountain landscapes in the Eastern Pyrenees, we had the opportunity to record the presence of Dactylorhiza maculata, commonly known as the Heath Spotted-orchid. This species was easily located near humid places, a habitat that perfectly matches its ecological preferences.
D. maculata is an orchid typical of acidic soils and humid environments, such as bogs and wet mountain meadows, commonly found between 1,420 and 2,200 meters of altitude. The conditions in Carlit, with numerous water points and vegetation adapted to humidity, favored its abundance. While the possible presence of other Dactylorhiza species is not ruled out, the vast majority of observed specimens displayed the distinctive characteristics of D. maculata, including the clearly visible dark spots on its lanceolate leaves and its solid stem, key features that give it its specific name and differentiate it from closely related species. This observation reinforces the importance of conserving these high-mountain ecosystems, which are vital for the orchid flora of the Pyrenees.
