Abundant Dactylorhiza maculata Observations in Aigüestortes National Park

During a four-day trek through Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park, we had the opportunity to observe hundreds of Dactylorhiza maculata, commonly known as the Heath Spotted-orchid. This abundant presence was consistently recorded near the numerous lakes and wet bogs encountered along the route, habitats that perfectly align with its preference for acidic, humid soils.

The plants were found in various stages of flowering, indicating a robust and well-established population. D. maculata, which can reach up to 60 cm in height, is distinguished by its wide, lanceolate leaves featuring the characteristic dark spots that give it its specific epithet 'maculata', and its compact, spike-like inflorescences of pink to purple flowers. Its prevalence in these high-altitude, moist environments came as no surprise, as it is one of the most common and widespread terrestrial orchids found in the Pyrenean wetlands.
