Heath Spotted-orchid found amidst D. majalis in Catalonia
Observed on 6/10/2026
Note about the genus Dactylorhiza
Orchids of the genus Dactylorhiza are easily confused with each other. Therefore, observations of this genus may not be entirely accurate regarding the identified species.
Description
During our final stop in the Ripollès region, we had the opportunity to observe a specimen of Dactylorhiza maculata, commonly known as the Heath Spotted-orchid. This find occurred in a damp environment, sharing its space with other orchids of the genus, specifically among individuals of Dactylorhiza majalis.
Dactylorhiza maculata is a robust species easily distinguished by its wide, lanceolate leaves, which feature prominent dark spots, giving rise to its specific epithet. A key characteristic that sets it apart from the majalis group, with which it can hybridize, is its solid stem, as opposed to the hollow stems typical of D. majalis. Its flowers, typically ranging from pink to purple, display a trilobed labellum adorned with concentric lines and dots, and are noted for their subtle vanilla scent.
This orchid thrives in acidic, humid soils such as bogs, wet meadows, and damp forest clearings, conditions commonly found in the Ripollès area within the montane and subalpine belts of the Catalan Pre-Pyrenees. While considered common in suitable habitats within Catalonia, this observation highlights the region's rich botanical diversity and the importance of preserving these delicate wetland ecosystems.
