Observation of Himantoglossum hircinum in Bud in Aude, France
Observed on 5/9/2026
Description
During a recent exploration across several locations within the Aude department, France, we made an observation of Himantoglossum hircinum, commonly known as the Lizard Orchid. This robust and large orchid species is frequently found in open environments such as meadows, grassy slopes, and notably, along road margins and abandoned fields, a habitat consistent with our findings.
We documented several specimens of this terrestrial orchid that were still in bud. On this occasion, we did not observe any open flowers, suggesting that the full bloom was either imminent or just beginning for the season. The presence of these plants, with their characteristic broad leaves, in areas adjacent to communication routes, highlights their preference for alkaline soils and full sun. This early-stage observation provides valuable data on the species' phenology in this region, anticipating the unfurling of its distinctive, ribbon-like labella and the emission of its characteristic scent.
