A Single Himantoglossum hircinum in La Garrotxa
Observed on 6/5/2026
Description
During a recent field outing in the La Garrotxa region, we documented a single specimen of the Himantoglossum hircinum, commonly known as the Lizard Orchid. This robust orchid stood prominently, showcasing its distinctive elongated, ribbon-like labellum, a key identification feature. Nearby, another individual was noted, still in its bud stage, indicating a potential ongoing flowering period for the local population.
The species typically prefers alkaline soils and open, sunny habitats such as meadows or grassy slopes, conditions often found in the area. Recognized for its unique appearance and characteristic scent, the Lizard Orchid is considered a rare species in Catalonia, making each observation valuable for understanding its distribution and presence in the region.
