Himantoglossum robertianum: Kicking Off the 2026 Season
Observed on 2/8/2026
Description
2026 kicks off with a delightful surprise! Taking advantage of a morning hike to Puig de ses Cadiretes, I made an "express stop" that gifted me the very first orchids of the season. The star of this early encounter was none other than the majestic Himantoglossum robertianum.
The observation was brief, just 20 minutes, but rewarding. Along the road connecting Santa Cristina d'Aro to Sant Feliu de Guíxols, I managed to locate two distinct populations of this species. Though it's still very early, I was fortunate enough to discover four specimens already in bloom, their impressive stature heralding the arrival of spring. Additionally, one plant was promising to bloom soon, and I counted more than forty plants that will not bloom this year.
