A Solitary Limodorum abortivum, Non-Flowering, at Roc de Cogul
Observed on 4/5/2026
Description
During our recent exploration along the Sant Honorat route, and within the first few kilometers, we had the pleasure of venturing onto shady paths that wound their way towards Roc de Cogul. In these cool, sheltered environments, where sunlight gently dappled through the canopy, we made an observation of a species that always captivates us with its elusive nature: a solitary specimen of Limodorum abortivum, commonly known as the Violet Helleborine.
This particular plant was found in a vegetative state, showing no signs of flowering, which is not at all uncommon for this intriguing orchid. Limodorum abortivum often spends much of its life underground or emerges without flowering for several years, making each encounter with a blooming plant a truly exceptional event. Despite the absence of flowers, the mere presence of this individual is a testament to the rich orchid biodiversity of this region. A subtle, yet always rewarding find!
