Unexpected Abundance of Neotinea conica
Observed on 3/8/2026
Description
I have had the opportunity to find Neotinea conica. This orchid, considered a rarity here in Catalonia, marked my first observation of this species in the region. And what an introduction it was!
The discovery took place in the Alt Empordà region, in a meadow situated near a road. What made this observation even more memorable was the sheer number of specimens: a true sea of flowers! We estimated there were surely over 50 blooming examples, although the accompanying rain prevented us from conducting a thorough count.
Despite the weather, I had the opportunity to photograph it in detail, capturing the beauty of its different shades. I was able to document both specimens with a pinker hue and others of pure white. A truly unforgettable experience that highlights the botanical richness of our country!
